Da-banggs and Booms of 2010

2010 was replete with Bollywood related gossip and news. As many faded into oblivion, several new news-makers appeared on the Bollywood scene. Here we take a look at five of the top stories of the year that made the headlines.

  1. Ipl 3– Many Bollywood stars were more in cricket related news than that about films. The third edition of the Indian Premier League saw stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta busy themselves with their respective teams. Over the three months for which the cricket competition was held, the fans saw these stars play out a drama of a different kind as their teams tasted victories and defeats. The year-end also brought a couple of them back in the limelight as the future of their teams in the competition hung in balance.
  2. Twitter– It seems as though in 2010 all of tinsel town found a new voice. ‘Tweets’ became a new form of expression which had fans and the media quite literally ‘following’ the celebrities’ every move. Number of followers became a new benchmark for popularity of the Bollywood biggies. From their latest films to their personal experiences and opinions, everything was tweeted about by them. As Karan Johar aptly tweeted some time ago:

Relevant and inconsequential banter on twitter…has the movie industry contributed to the latter?? I know I have….

With several Bollywood celebrities ranging from Amitabh Bachchan(SrBachchan ) and Priyanka Chopra(priyankachopra ) to Farah Khan(TheFarahKhan ) and Preity Zinta(realpreityzinta), using this micro-blogging website, it not only kept everyone updated about their lives, but also became a marketing strategy for the stars and their movies. Many also used it as a way to critique each other’s work. For example, after several people had picked on Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag, the man in question here- Ram Gopal Verma, went ahead and tweeted this recently:

In front of Tees maar khan Rgv ki aag is sholay

  3. Dabangg and Munni– With the release of Dabangg, Salman Khan returned to the screen after 3 years and how! While his last release Partner had only enjoyed moderate success at the box office, Dabangg broke several records as it grossed a whopping  80.87 crore (US$7.55 million) in its first week, thus becoming the highest opening week grossing Bollywood film. It went on to become the highest grossing Bollywood film of 2010. The item number Munni Badnaam Hui  from the movie became quite a rage and added to the popularity of the film. Besides the Zhandu Baam controversy, the song also had its run-ins with the censor board that looked to remove certain ‘inappropriate’ words from it. The controversies aside, the song and the film enjoyed a lot of attention for quite some time.

  4. KJo’s Koffee with Karan– What started as just another chat show, ended up becoming a platform for stars confessing their ‘true’ feelings about each other and sometimes even cracking wise ones about their colleagues in the industry. From Deepika’s comments about Ranbir to Kareena questioning the origin of Priyanka Chopra’s apparent accent, there were several jokes directed by the guests at their colleagues on the show. While the host Karan Johar tried to implore his Bollywood pals to awaken their sense of humour, many thought that his questions instigated his guests to pass such comments. All in all, season 3 of Koffee with Karan proved to be nothing short of entertaining and was in the news rather too often.

  5. TMK and Sheila- Great amount of hype was built around Farah Khan’s movie Tees Maar Khan. As Sheila Ki Jawani catapulted the movie to instant fame, it too was not spared by the censor board. But the silly objections made by the board failed to hinder the success of the item number. It was not only compared to Munni.. but also outdid the latter in its popularity. The movie itself though failed to live up to the hype and proved to be a disappointment for many. Regardless of that, TMK and Sheila seem to have set a new standard for item numbers of the next decade.
